Kiwi competitions and more.
On Thursday Betty and I were invited to present the Coventry Trophy to the winner of the Coventry League at Christchurch PC. The winner, Annie, is a relatively inexperienced player and was delighted to receive the trophy, especially so since she had returned from holiday in Australia a day early. ( because of the fires, I hasten to add). The presentation was made at the weekly afternoon tea and I took the opportunity to present the club with a Coventry flag, which was immediately run up the flag pole. Some photos are in the Gallery page. I understand that this is probably the furthest from Coventry that a Coventry flag has been flown.

Saturday 18th. Jan we were entered in the tenth anniversary Drawn Triples in memory of the former President of Papanui PC Arthur Diaper. Some may remember Arthur from when he played at Coventry on a few occasions, while visiting his brother in Birmingham, about 10 11 or 12 years ago. We had mixed results with Betty winning 4 of 5 games in the morning and thus getting into the main competition for the afternoon and me not winning a single game. The competition split down into 4 leagues in the afternoon, Main, Plate, Bowl and Consolage. Betty lost in the semi-final of the main and so came away with nothing but I managed to get into the Bowl, losing by a narrow margin, and getting a badge for my effort. The competition was followed by tea and cakes and later in the evening many of the players got together for diner in the excellent restaurant in the club house. Footnote: How often can one lose the toss 8 times in a row????? I did on Saturday

Another fabulous weekend of Petanque and socialising. Played in the Alexandra Pairs competition on Saturday 25th. in temperatures of 37c. The terrain was rather "technical" as it was played on the car park of the Iceinline satdium in Alexandra. Betty and I came a disappointing 15th. out of 20 in a Swiss format, but enjoyed it all. Winners were Philip and Cathryn from Dunedin City.
Sunday we played in the Funday competition with better results achieving 3rd. equal. This is a drawn pairs competition where you keep the same partner all day however the format was one new to me, which they call Boulé Vite. Numerous games to 4 ends only and the points difference at the end is the deciding factor. A bit like a petanque version of 20/20 cricket.
Betty was teamed up with one of our hosts, David Beer, while I was teamed with Christchurch,s Pat Oshea.
After the competition I was able to present a Coventry flag to the Alexandra club thus making the Christchurch record for having the flag furthest from Coventry short lived, just 24 miles further than Alex. After the afternoon tea there was a fancy dress theme of Dead Celeb. Now I wonder who TT and BT were??? (See gallery)
