2017 Summer League end.
There was a very close finish to the 2017 Club Summer League on Friday 29th. September. After leading for most of the season, club Chairman needed a win to secure the title and keep clear of the chasing pack, Brian and Nouri. In the event he fell at the final hurdle, when he and Arthur were well beaten by Nouri and Reg. Brian, accompanied by Alf and Charles, then beat Keith, Sheila and Alan so ending tony's hopes, the title going to Nouri by just a single point after 22 weeks of play.
Congratulations to Nouri for a well fought contest.
Thanks to Keith for recording the results and doing the number crunching.
The 2017/2018 Winter league starts on Friday October 13th. Tony Thompson.
Coventry Open Triples 10th. September 2017
A very interesting day at the Open Triples.
The weather almost behaved itself for the 10 teams who competed for title. In a competition played over 5 rounds.
Five games went the full distance, one ended 13-1, but no triple was fannied.
The link to the full results is on the results page.
About an hour after we started play we were visited by the local radio station, BBC CWR. Apparently our match was the answer to a clue in the weekly treasure hunt. The live broadcast can be heard here: - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05d6p0p
Scroll to 1 hour 38 mins. into the programme and enjoy the next 10 minutes or so. Fortunately this did not disrupt the players as John Baxter was the interviewee and he was not playing today.
After 5 exciting games two teams managed to contrive exactly the same number of wins and points difference to head the table equal first. The title was decided by a single tie breaker and the first prize of wine and biscuits went to Aimee Collee, David Mason, Ben Alexander and Geoff Philips. Second were Graham and Bunty Arblaster with Roger Seabury. Third place was taken by juniors Elianne David and Jordon DeBurgo playing with the experienced Ian Brittain.
Aimee was heard to remark after the tie break that it was the first time she had ever won by scoring just one point.

Whitnash Windmill PC 11th June 2017
On a lovely day at Whitnash, 16 pairs turned out to play the HoE Pairs. This was almost the perfect number for the competition which got off on time. The teams were split into four leagues of four. Top two teams went on to contest the main competition, with the bottom two in each group contesting the plate.
The competition was good throughout with three teams on three wins from the round robin leagues. After the quarter finals, it was left to four teams competing for the coveted trophy.
In the first semi-final, the only Hereford pairs competing, Mel and Ian Williams came up against the Coventry/Solihull pairing of Brian Stote and Penny Bratos, with the Hereford pair overcoming the strong challenge to make the final.
The second semi-final again saw pairs made up from different clubs, with England B Junior, Alfie Potter from Stockton and Ben Alexander from Nomads playing the more experienced pairing of Gary Durant from Solihull and Rich Powell from Stockton. In this game, experience told over youth and enthusiasm, taking Gary and Phil to the final.
The final was played with friendly rivalry, but the trophy and the spoils were to travel down the M5 to Hereford, as Mel and Ian came away with the win after a hard fought game.
The Plate final was contested between the Nomades pair of Phil Price and Julia Belu, and the mixed club pairing of Geoff Phillips from Solihull and Dave Hancox from Stockton. This was the last game to be completed, and the Nomades pair proved that little bit better to finish as Plate champions for 2017.
A well organised event. Thanks must go to Whitnash for hosting, and to John Emberton who stood in well to manage the results from a well maintained engine room.

Heart of England Summer league 2017
The HoE Summer League ended with Nomades Berbers heading Division one with a total of 41 wins out of 56 games and a massive points difference of plus 207. Touaregs made it a 1-2 for Nomades when they ended the contest with 34 wins.
Coventry's Leofric team move up one place from last years number 5 position to take the fourth slot with 28 wins but a disappointing points difference of -49.
In Division two Solihull Swallows edged out Coventry's Godiva team to take the top slot by winning 30 of their 40 games with a points difference of +113, Godiva won 27 and managed a points difference of +92 to take second place and will join Leofric in the top echelon of the competition. Congratulations to both teams.
Changes to the rules this year allowed players to be used in either division thus making it easier for club captains to assemble teams for each round, a change which I know Brian was grateful for, with our low numbers of EPA registered players. I encourage every Coventry player to consider taking out EPA membership next year and to make yourself available for selection for club representation and take part in regional and national competitions. Playing against top players improves your playing standard.
